Seventy Years of Radio: Sowing a Word You Can't See Land

Picture the room. A microphone, a pair of headphones, a page of Scripture, and a person reading it aloud into a signal that leaves the building and does not come back. No studio audience. No comments section. No way to know if a single human being is listening.

A Christian radio network is marking seventy years of broadcasting the gospel into North Korea and beyond. Seventy years of that room. Seventy years of someone showing up, opening the Book, and speaking to listeners they have never met and may never meet this side of heaven.

I keep turning that number over. Seventy years is long enough that the people who sat down for the first broadcast have handed the work to a generation that had not yet been born. Somebody kept the lights on. Somebody kept paying for the transmitter. Somebody kept believing that a word spoken into the air was not a word wasted.

Farmers understand this better than the rest of us

We have folks in Ravenna who know exactly what this feels like, because they do it every spring. You put seed into ground you cannot see into. You cover it. You walk away. For weeks there is nothing to look at but dirt, and nothing to do but wait and tend and trust that what is happening underground is real.

God says it that way Himself: "As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it" (Isaiah 55:10-11).

Notice what He does not promise. He does not promise you will see it. He does not promise a report, a photograph, a testimony email, a number you can put in a newsletter. He promises the word will accomplish its purpose. The results are guaranteed; the visibility is not.

That is a hard trade for people like me. Leading in business teaches you to measure. You want the dashboard, the trend line, the proof that the effort converted into something. And there is nothing wrong with measuring. But some of the most important work God gives His people has no dashboard at all, and if you only invest where you can measure, you will quietly stop doing the deepest things.

Most of your sowing is invisible too

You may never run a transmitter, but you are already broadcasting into places you cannot see.

The mother praying for a grown child who has stopped answering calls. The man who texts a verse to a coworker and gets no reply. The volunteer teaching nine-year-olds who will not understand what they were given for another twenty years. The grandparent who prays by name every morning for people who have no idea it is happening. The young believer who invited a friend once, got a polite no, and has not stopped praying since.

None of that comes with a receipt. All of it is seed.

And here is what I want you to hold onto: the Holy Spirit is not waiting for your follow-up. He goes where the word goes. He is at work right now in a kitchen in Muskegon, in a dorm room, in a country whose borders no missionary can cross, pressing a sentence somebody heard years ago into a heart that is finally ready for it. We pray with real expectancy, because He really moves — and we leave the timing and the evidence with Him.

Where this lands for us

This Sunday is Mission Sunday at Outpouring, and I can think of no better frame for it than that quiet studio. Giving to missions is sowing into ground you will not walk on. Praying for a nation is speaking into a room you will never enter. You will not get a harvest report for most of it. You will get something better: a God who says the word does not come back empty.

If you are the one who has been praying a long time with nothing to show for it — a marriage, a healing, a child, a hope you have almost stopped saying out loud — hear this gently. Silence on your end is not absence on His. Seed underground looks like nothing right up until it does not.

Jesus called Himself the sower and told us the seed is the word. He has been patient with ground like mine for a long time. He is patient with yours. Keep speaking into the dark; the One who sent the word is the One who brings the harvest, and He has never lost a crop yet.
