Study Guide: Stop Waiting, Start Expecting

Key Verse

Romans 8:17 — "Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory."

Overview

This message confronts the drift from active expectation to passive endurance in our faith lives — going through the motions of prayer and church without truly believing God will move. Drawing on Romans 8:17, the sermon calls believers to remember their identity as heirs of God and to stop settling for a poverty mindset when spiritual riches have already been assigned to them. The core challenge is this: you cannot protect yourself from disappointment without also blocking yourself from the miracle.

Discussion Questions

  1. Think of a time in your life when you were genuinely excited and expectant about something — a trip, a relationship, a new opportunity. What did that anticipation feel like, and how did it affect your daily attitude?
  2. The sermon described "passive endurance" as dragging through routines — prayer, church attendance — without really expecting God to do anything. Where did you see that pattern most clearly described in the message?
  3. The pastor said, "The longer you go without expectation, the harder it is to expect." Why do you think disappointment and unanswered prayer over time can quietly train us to stop believing for breakthrough?
  4. Is there an area of your life — a prayer you've been praying, a need you've been carrying — where you've shifted from expectation to simply endurance? What would it look like to approach that situation differently this week?
  5. The sermon warned that the same wall we build to protect ourselves from hurt is the wall that blocks out the miracle. What is one specific thing you can do to lower that wall and reopen yourself to genuine expectation before God?

This Week's Challenge

Identify one prayer you have been praying out of habit rather than hope, and each day this week pray it deliberately — out loud — ending with the phrase, "Lord, I am expecting You to move in this." Journal any shifts you notice in your attitude or faith by the end of the week.

Prayer Focus

Ask God to replace every place where endurance has quietly replaced expectation, and to renew in each group member a bold, childlike confidence in His promise to move on their behalf.
